At the centre we run evening courses throughout the year in order to help and educate those interested to train their horse, ex-racehorse or not. We started to run them a couple of years ago, mainly because there was a huge request from those attending our Weekend Demonstrations, that they could not find anywhere, where they could go to learn how to long-rein their horse effectively. Many attendees at our Demos had seen the value of this simple and easy re-training method.

Most of our evening courses start with the simple art of long-reining and all attendees get a chance to have a go with some of our ex-racehorses, as they all long-rein easily. Explanations and demos of all aspects are covered and much advice given re any problems discussed.

Otherwise the evening courses cover the training methods used here to help these horses to become easy, comfortable rides and any requests are responded to so attendees feel the course is tailored for them. The courses are useful and applicable to those with an ex-racehorses but also to those with any horse that they wish to understand more and to improve.

So far we have always managed to have a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere at these courses. They are a good place to meet other horse owners in the area and to have a cuppa! All sessions are in the indoor school so weather is not an issue and we keep the cost down so students and less well-off people are not excluded. The staff, very much enjoy helping those who attend and the revenue earned goes to pay the feed or vets bills.

Testimonials

Some feedback from former attendees at theses courses:

I have now attended 3 evening courses at Moorcroft and have just kept coming back for more! The chance to long-rein one of the horses under instruction has been invaluable to me with my own horse and I have come away with much sound advice on other aspects of my training. I always look forward to the next evening course at M.R.W.C.

I really enjoyed the last few sessions that I attended at your recent evening course and just felt I should write to tell you. I have been practicing what I have learned and it is really working for me and my horse. I enjoyed seeing your girls ride so quietly and felt there was always such a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. Thank you.

I thought I would just drop you a line on how much I enjoyed the six week evening course back in October. I found the weekly sessions not only informative but most enjoyable as well. I thought each evening was pitched at the right level for the audience present, which varied from quite experienced horse people down to my level of being completely self taught. The simple examples you used to demonstrate the possible back problems horses have when they first come to Moorcroft and how, with the correct care and retraining methods, they can go on to lead very useful and enjoyable lives in the future.

The horse anatomy session was particular useful to me as well as the opportunity to have the chance of the ‘hands on’ experience of actually long-lining these part retrained horses. By having a go at the long-lining enabled those that tried it for themselves to see and feel the different level one horse had reached compared to another. I also found your staff most helpful when assisting us to do this properly.

The extra bits of information you touched on, such as the use of Aloe Vera Gel, was useful too. My two Arabs now have a daily dose and I can see the benefits in their coat and skin already.

I look forward to your next course in February and the ridden presentations in the Spring and Summer.
