Re-homing Process

At the centre, we always have a variety of horses available at any one time for re-homing and we take a lot of time and care to make sure that the right horse is matched to the right keeper so then everybody should be happy. We certainly have a good selection of safe hacks and those who enjoy schooling here at any one time. If you are looking for a long-term commitment, it is worth calling Mary on 07929 666408 (between 7am and 4pm) to discuss your specific requirements.

Appointments

We try to make appointments as relaxed and friendly as possible as we do understand that it is not always in everybody’s comfort zone, to go to a strange place and ride an unknown horse. A variety of horses will be ridden in the school for you to see and the whole point of the appointment is that you will have a ride on some or all so we can learn more here, what type is best suited to you. All the horses are calm and rideable and you can try them as many times as you like in different situat

The horses

All the horses go through a calm and quiet re-training programme and they are not put up for re-homing until they have been in sane, sound work for some time. Most of them visibly thrive on the less pressurised, slower, more comfortable work and start to build confidence and strength very quickly. We have tried to provide some videos to give you a sample of our horses working, so please have a look. If you are interested to know more about some of the re-training it is explained in more detail

Moorcroft’s requirements in a new home

At Moorcroft we are always asked what we require in a new home for these horses. We ask that you have thought it through well enough and that you are ready to have an ex-racehorse and that you are looking for a long-term commitment where you will have funds available to care for a horse properly and the time to enjoy your new friend. We ask that you insure for Vets fees as you will be responsible for them and we look for a safe environment for the horse to live in. The most important thing to

Not sure if an ex-racehorse is for you?

The most important thing is to make contact and if we have possible horses that might suit you, available at the time, we will give you an appointment to take things further. We re-home horses to any part of the country and always visit the home first before the horse leaves.

We run regular Demos of the horses ridden and 2 or 3 evening courses per year and it is a good idea to come to some of these, if you are unsure as to whether an ex-racehorse is for you.

Donations when re-homing

We would not devalue the horses by letting them leave here for nothing and also we need to run the charity and provide for these horses, so we ask for a one-off donation to the charity when we re—home one of these horses. The amount is a lot less than the market value and is flexible and negotiable depending on your circumstances.

Testimonials

FIRST IN SHOW In June 2009 having sadly lost my horse, I found myself wondering which direction to take in order to find another one. I was quite adamant that I wasn’t going to travel the length and breadth of the country looking at horses’ that weren’t as described, or having to decide whether I was being told the whole truth from unscrupulous sellers, and as I was looking for another thoroughbred I did some research on the various rehabilitation centres and chose Moorcroft.

Initially I had a very long conversation over the phone with Mary, Moorcroft Yard Manager, discussing my relevant experience and requirements. Mary told me about two mares that she thought would be suitable and I arranged to meet them the following week.

The Centre is extremely professional yet very tranquil and Mary immediately puts you at ease. I rode both horses in the school and learnt their history and their capabilities so far. I left the centre having made arrangement to go back 2 weeks later to hack out both mares, although I was very taken with First, and Mary said she wouldn’t show her to anyone else till I had been back, which was brilliant because I was under there no pressure to make a hasty decision.

Hacking out on that second occasion gave me the chance to “grill” the poor groom that came out with me over every possible question I could think of, and then I spent time on the yard just grooming and handling First and the decision was made to have her and arrangements made for our livery inspection and date that we would pick her up.

First has now been with me two and a half years and has been an absolute gem. She has won numerous show classes, done a couple of dressage tests and enjoys hacking, schooling and Parelli at home as well as enjoying being the centre of attention.

In conclusion I can truthfully say that having a horse from Moorcroft can only be a “win win” situation for all concerned. Time, effort and care is taken to match the right horse with the right owner. It is not in anyone’s interest (least of all the horse) to go away having made the wrong decision, and there is always back up help and advice from both Mary and her team, all of whom are extremely experienced and knowledgeable and only a phone call or email away. I am very honoured to have a lovely, well mannered and intelligent horse with which I shall have a lot of good times with. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Moorcroft to anyone wishing to have a well trained, versatile horse for competing or just enjoying having fun with.
